Dropper Knot

Saltwater Fishing - Helping you catch that fish of a lifetime

Dropper Knot

The Dropper Knot creates an inline loop that can be used to attach leaders, hooks, bait rigs and sinkers.  Bottom fishermen choose it because it can be used to attach a lure or rubber worm right above a jig.  It’s also great to add several hooks on the same line.  A well made Dropper Knot can be quite helpful when you need to add a little something extra to your rig.  Here’s how to make a Dropper Knot:

1. Figure out where you are going to need the Dropper loop.  Make a loop in that place and hold the part where the two sides cross each other.

2. Take the loop and wrap it over the crossover point 4 to 6 times.  The more you wrap, the stronger it will be, so make adjustments depending on the weight of the extra item you need the loop for.

3. Make an opening at the middle of the point where the two ends of the lines initially overlapped.

4. Pull the loop through the opening until it’s the size you need.  Lubricate the knot thoroughly and pull it tight.  Remember to lubricate the knot or your Dropper Knot may not tighten completely.

5. Then hold the loop with your teeth and pull each end of the line so that the knot pulls tight together at the base of the loop.  The knot should appear symmetrical on both sides.

The best feature of the Dropper Knot is that it angles the loop away from the fishing line. This prevents tangling and makes the system work better. The knot ends up perpendicular to the line, and is completely adjustable to your needs.  It can be long or short, or there can be multiple Dropper Knots throughout the line.

The Dropper Knot isn’t very difficult to construct, and is available at any time when other gear may not be present on the boat.  Learning it may not only help you be more successful, but it may also allow you to be more creative with your presentation when the situation requires it.
