Daiwa Luna Series Baitcasting Reels

by Capt. Terry Rand

If you've been a fan of round style baitcasters like the International and the Calcutta, then you're bound to love the Daiwa Luna series.

Daiwa Luna Series

The Daiwa Luna series is Daiwa’s highly refined and traditionally designed round baitcasting reel that is built for both freshwater and saltwater use. The Luna was introduced a few years back to replace the older Millionaire series, a reel that had already earned a reputation for solid performance. The Luna puts Daiwa in direct competition with the Shimano Calcutta round baitcasting series of reels, being positioned in a similar price range.

First Impressions

Straight out of the box the Daiwa Luna earns some respect with its shiny, anodized gold finish with chrome screws and levelwind system. These lightweight reels have a very solid feel, with frame and sideplates being constructed from solid bar stock aluminum. The Luna is designed with power and smoothness is mind, which can be felt when turning the reel handle. The machine cut precision gears mesh flawlessly for super smooth reel rotation and the handle exhibits almost no backplay when the Infinite anti-reverse kicks in. The reel is quite smooth considering the bearing count is relatively low for a reel of this caliber, with a total of 6 bearings including the roller bearing. The Luna reel, with the exception of the 300 size, sports the Daiwa Magforce-Z automatic magnetic braking system that is easily adjusted by pressing and turning the sideplate opposite the reel handle. The 300 utilizes the Daiwa Centriflex automatic centrifugal brake system. The Daiwa free floating spool design in the Luna spins like a dream when you put the reel into freespool. The spool itself is cut from aircraft grade aluminum to reduce weight and the top of the reel body is ported to help in the weight department too. The titanium nitrided stainless steel line guide should stand up well to braided line use as well.
